things I wish I knew before my first maternity session ~ expecting parents {lake travis family photographer}

This couple nailed all the things that a first time maternity session should be all about! And it was hot—like 106 degrees hot—and neither of them ever complained. They were totally celebrating each other and this special time in their lives. It made me think about when I hired a photographer for my personal maternity session and um…it was nothing like this. So for new parents out there looking toward their first maternity session—here are a few things I wish I would have known…

  1. It is all about you two! It will probably be the last photo session as a family of “two” so go/do play one last time just the two of you. Want something silly? serious? wild? romantic? Do it! Find a photographer who is as excited about it as you. Don’t settle for an easy location—save that one for when your baby is a toddler.

  2. Professional hair and makeup. Your hair changes, your skin changes, it’s nice to be spoiled with a professional to make you feel absolutely gorgeous. This momma here is a professional hair and make up artist and was able to keep her hair looking amazing in 106 degrees. Her makeup? Never ran. If you’re planning any kind of professional photos soon—call her flairstylelounge.com—I know she will do the same for you! (Especially you first time mommas—it is so nice for someone to come and fix your hair and makeup with a newborn—but that’s another post ;). ) (Also want to give a shout out to dad-to-be—he surprised his wife with a session soon after they found out they were expecting. If you’re looking for hemp oil—or would like to support a veteran owned small business—check him out at pureamericanhempoil.com)

  3. Style. Find a dress/shirt/skirt that has the right fit. The shirt I bought for my session two weeks before, did not fit the morning of my session! That belly grows fast near the end! Find something that has a little stretch, a little give, or has movement, so it can “grow with you.” I provide a styling site that helps with what to wear for every session. The site pulls together current trends that photograph beautifully on glowing moms-to-be.

  4. Location. It is important that the style of your location enhances your clothing choices and hair and makeup. It is important for it to “feel” like you. If you don’t have a perfect location, your photographer should offer multiple options to see which one makes you most excited about your session.

  5. Have fun! Your session should be more of a fun experience than a stressful photo session. Think of it as more of a fun date—you bought a new outfit and have professional hair and makeup—and it’s all about the excitement you both have waiting for your new little one.

If you are expecting and like the feel and vibe of these photos—reach out—and let’s make some art for your nursery walls.
